smising
A subtle but unmistakable formation (even at distance) of the brow and a simultaneous narrowing and widening of the eye.
Accompanied with an uplift of the cheekbones and a phantom glitter in the pupil, the overall effect is a softening of the face leading to invitation of the target to discourse or, indeed, a reciprocal smise.
Incorrectly spelled smeyes or smyze, the phenomenon is overwhelmingly seen in humans but also some primates and canines, most notably Canis lupus familiaris "Chihuahua".
In canines, it is possible for a smise to be colocated above a growl (known as grising). In this circumstance, the antecedent emotion is always contentment, not anger Brauer et al. 1976
