pickup

the piece(s) in an electric guitar that converts the vibration of the strings into an electrical signal, which would then be converted into audible sound by an amplifier or a computer. it consists of a series (normally 6) of thin coils wrapped around a tiny magnet.

the quality of the pickups in a guitar are as much as important as build quality.

gauge

the thickness of a guitar string set (usually of the lightest string, in inches, which is enough to know the thickness of the rest)

if you wanna play metal, i suggest you slap on .011 gauge strings on your guitar. i personally like to do a lot of bends, so i prefer 8's because they don't hurt my fingers.
