Has lost touch with their cultural or communal roots,

Does so not out of malice, but out of a tragic mixture of fear, confusion, dependency, or misplaced loyalty.
The term carries both psychological and moral weight — “tragically beleaguered” suggests that the person is internally conflicted, not necessarily evil, but spiritually trapped in a cycle of self-betrayal and service to those who undermine their own community or dignity.
