A video game, somewhat of a guitar simulation. Players use a controller shaped like a guitar, though only 3/4 the size, and 1/4 the weight. There are 5 "fret buttons", and a "strum bar." The game is played by holding down corresponding fret buttons and then "strumming" the notes as they scroll by on the TV screen. Hammer-ons and pull-offs are also possible. The songlists usually consist of popular classic rock songs like Ziggy Stardust and Killer Queen, or 80s hard rock/metal like Sweet Child O' Mine and Madhouse, though occasionally you'll find some modern stuff like Laid To Rest (Lamb of God) and Beast and the Harlot (Avenged Sevenfold)

While it's a great game, many elitist real guitar players see it as a lazy man's alternative to the real guitar, often expressing their dislike for the game and saying at the end "go get a REAL guitar!1!" The thing is, IT'S JUST A VIDEO GAME. I'm pretty sure neither of us has ever seen a person who, after 5-starring a song on Expert, truly believes he can play it on a real guitar.

And either way, what's wrong with enjoying it? I have the game, both GH1 and GH2, AND I have a real guitar. I practice it every day. Why should I not be able to enjoy the GAME? It's just a hobby. Who says that, by playing a video game about playing a musical instrument, that means you HAVE to go play the REAL thing? Face it, some people just want to have fun, not feel obligated to spend thousands of dollars and years of their life in practice and devotion. The two are completely different.

You might as well say "why play NFL Madden when you can play football for REAL?? Why play Flight Simulator when you can fly a REAL plane?? Why play Halo when you can shoot down aliens for REAL??" Notice how the last one makes very little sense? It's the same with Guitar Hero.

If you honestly hate the fact that people can attract audiences with this game, then why don't YOU play YOUR real guitar? And if you do, why waste your time coming up to people who play this game? you focus on your stuff, and they focus on theirs.
Guitar Hero Hater: Man Guitar Hero sucks! Who wants to play with a stupid plastic toy guitar when you can play a REAL guitar?!? All you n00bs are gay!

Guitar Hero Player: Yea, ok... what if I told you I just want to have fun? I don't think I can play the real guitar, but I truly have no interest in it. Is that such a bad thing?

Guitar Hero Hater: Pff you're such a fag. Guitar Hero shouldn't even exist. Only REAL guitar players should get any recognition!

Guitar Hero Player: Oh really? And what about you? Do YOU play real guitar? I want to see your "skills"

Guitar Hero Hater: Uhh.. fuck off, man. I got a Gibson Les Paul. I can play.. uhh... Seven Nation Army. Yea, there you go. I'm better than you.

A much-hated subgenre of metal or hard rock, depending on how you view it, that started in the early 90s.

The main characteristics of nu-metal are as follows:
1. Rather short, simplistic songs with some sort of pop hooks
2. Lyrics about personal issues and feelings
3. Lack of guitar solos (if any solos are present, they are usually ahort or not very complex)
4. Many bands take in some elements of funk and rap and mix it with heavy metal music (early Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc.)
5. Music which places more emphasis on lyrical meaning and image than technicality

While I agree that some nu-metal out there is quite terrible, a lot of nu-metal out there is hated for the wrong reasons. Some people hate it just because it's popular, some people hate it just because it has no solos, or some people hate it just because the lyrics are somewhat more emotional than lyrics of old-school metal.

Hating a band just because it's popular is like refusing to play a sport like, say, football, just because a lot of people love it. "No way, man! I'm TOTALEE underground and kvlt. I should not be doing any shit that more than 2 people are a part of. I must be DIFFERENT!1!" Honestly, no one cares if you're a rebel. No one is going to praise you or follow in your footsteps. Why must you try so hard to be different?

It's also pathetic to hate a song just because of the lack of technicality. "Ooo, look at me! I'm generic tr00 metal guitarist #628! I can wank off on a guitar and hit 6489789704 notes per second!!! I am so tr00 metal." Face it, some artists like Yngwie Malmsteen and Dragonforce may have a lot of skill and speed on guitar, but a lot of their songs get old REALLY fast. Speed does not always equal talent. There's more to songwriting than making sure that every song has more than 10,000 notes in it, and if you can't understand that, then you obviously know nothing about music.

Also, what's wrong with emotional lyrics? Even "real metal" bands like Megadeth and Dream Theater bring lots of emotion into their songs (Megadeth - Trust, or Dream Theater - The Glass Prison), but are they hated for that? No. Why should nu-metal be any different? It's sometimes pointless and dumb to write every song about random evil crap like Slayer just to prove how much of a "tough guy" you are. Everyone has feelings. Some people want to express them. Deal with it.

So, now that that's out of the way, once again, I'll agree with most of you that some nu-metal out there is definitely a false type of metal that's made just for money or mass appeal. These bands should be burned alive along with their music collections if they won't learn to make real music. But you should also know that some nu-metal out there can be really good. Don't just hate a whole genre to be "rebellious" and "different."
nu-metal hater #1: Man all nu-metal sucks! It's a bunch of guys with no instrumental talent making songs about their feelings that nobody cares about!! You should listen to REAL metal like (insert 80s bands here) because they make songs about Satan and play a billion notes per second!!

Normal Person: You, sir, are an idiot.

Metal that does not come from the heart. Metal in which the artists show no passion. Metal which is made for the sole purpose of being marketed and whored out to every mindless dimwit out there who believes that listening to a popular band will make them "hardcore."

Unlike what many of the other people here have said, false metal is NOT simply any band that you don't like. If I didn't like Iron Maiden (and just for the record I DO like them), does that give me the right to say they are false metal? No! And you know why? Because their music DOES come from the heart, and the performers DO have a strong passion for it.

It's the same with many other bands out there. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is false metal, even though it's true that many bands out there whose music DOES suck do play false metal.
I'm going to avoid listing some "false metal" bands to avoid controversy. However, a lot of the big bands on the list should be quite obvious if you're a big metal fan.

Any of those obnoxious bulletins that some of your emo/scene/whatever friends post occasionally. It's usually called something like "Capcom Train," "Toy Box Murder," "Silent Hill Train," or anything similar, and it's basically a bulletin promoting some sort of group or club.

Inside the bulletin are pictures of the group's members in order of rank, as well as a billion clickable links to add the people AND group to your buddies list and groups list.

But get this. No matter WHAT THE HELL the train is called, no matter WHAT THE HELL this little club is about, and no matter WHAT THE HELL the rules are, EVERY SINGLE FUCKING member is emo. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING member is a camera whore. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING member has the infamous myspace angle with weird black hair covering half of their face with eyeliner on. It's just... annoying.. to see that kind of thing ALL the time.
*someone posts a new bulletin*

Typical Myspace Train:
"Toy Box Murder"

*clicks*

"TOY BOX MURDER!! OWNERS: *shows display pictures of two emo kids* CO-OWNERS: *shows even more emo kids* MEMBERS: *shows the biggest list of emo kids you've ever seen in your life*"

A really good band. One of the better ones around.

Sadly, however, their reputation is ruined by self-righteous "Manowarriors" who throw around the words "true metal," "false metal" and "poser" to justify all of their opinions about music.

What true metal REALLY means: Metal that comes from the heart, is played with real passion, and is not made just for money or mass appeal - NOT "any band that I really like." False metal is any metal that is the opposite of this - NOT "any band that I don't like," unlike what many of the idiots on this site say. ALSO, a poser is someone who tries to be something/one that they are not by any means, like a preppy trying to be an emo - NOT "any person who doesn't like Manowar."

What this basically means is that there may be a band out there that you like, but is not "true metal," and there may be a band that you really hate, but they ARE "true metal." And hell, there may be some big Manowar fans out there who are total posers themselves. Don't bend their words to try to justify any dumb opinion you may have.

For example, some people have said Lamb of God is true metal. The other day, someone on a message board said Lamb of God is false metal. So what does this mean then? Neither of those fans know ANYTHING about true/false metal. They are just throwing words around to try to seem like their opinion is law, and that "I know what I'm talking about because Manowar said so."

But, if you leave some of the moronic super fans out, Manowar is really a great, talented band that's worth a listen for anyone who likes metal.
Generic Manowar Fan: Manowar is the best band ever! Hail and Kill!! I don't like the majority of the world's other bands though, so they're all false metal!! Everyone who likes them is a poser!!!

Normal Manowar Fan: Dude... shut up, or Manowar will come out and rip your face off for disgracing their name.
