Get the Putinesque mug.Businesses thrive on public spending, and though they can suffer when people are worried about the virus and safety, they can also suffer if they try and run people off for not wearing a mask inside. Customers are still trying to go in and spend money, but if that is no longer possible due to trespassing laws, the businesses will lose those of their customers that aren't wearing masks, its inevitable. You aren't in support of both the economy and public health at the same time, or finding a balance between the two, when you take away the bullshit it's simply been nothing but a power struggle. You've got some governors who wanted people to show them if they're not bluffing.
Requiring masks is another way for someone to try to gain compliance/alliance with the public. They're popular with some people, there are always going to be a few who disagree though.
