Hickster

An individual who identifies with several elements indicative of the hipster subculture whilst also participating in activities that are classically defined as redneck or “Hick”. This balance of traits have often traditionally been seen at odds with each other: hipster culture has dominated urban spaces, and often encapsulates populations that are left leaning, culturally and racially diverse, and of younger generations, While redneck culture has been accepted as definitively rural, conservative, and often resonating most with older generations. Hicksters most often self-identify with the hipster subculture, but engage in activities that are traditionally held as redneck pastimes. Though they grew up listening to indie mainstays such as Arcade Fire and Bon Iver, they have started listening to newer alt-country artists, i.e. Orville Peck and The Chicks. A hickster will watch Wes Anderson movies or talk about the failures of the American health system whilst driving to the gun range. They ride a fixed gear bike to their graphic design job, and stop by the auto store on their way home to pick up parts for the 91’ Bronco they are restoring. They have Chickens, but are probably vegetarian. Austin TX is the coolest place in the world to them. They talk about modern art while fly fishing in Idaho. Their shoes alternate between black vans and cowboy boots. They have in-depth opinions about barbeque. they drink Topo Chico and have a tattoo of a fish somewhere on their body.
