keffiyah
A headscarf traditionally worn by Arab men. In western countries it is worn primarily as a symbol of Palestinian nationalism.
Some university students wear keffiyahs as a symbol of their solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Japhies
A member of the beat counterculture, or one who lives a beat lifestyle. Similar to a hippie. The term comes from Jack Kerouac's book "The Dharma Bums." (Japhy is the name of a character, modeled after Kerouac’s friend Gary Snyder.)
