When a student (commonly, in High School) takes so many advanced level classes (i.e. AP and IB) and extracurriculars that they cannot possibly pass or succeed in them all efficiently without sacrificing the time for basic human needs.

Reading Between the Texts
Akin to the phrase “Reading between the lines” reading between the texts is a phrase used to describe the confusion of tone and implication in texting, especially with the member of preferred sex.
She texted me “Hey” but with 2 y’s. Maybe she thinks I’m cute, but I could be reading between the texts.
