Akin to the phrase “Reading between the lines” reading between the texts is a phrase used to describe the confusion of tone and implication in texting, especially with the member of preferred sex.
She texted me “Hey” but with 2 y’s. Maybe she thinks I’m cute, but I could be reading between the texts.

Person 2: Yeah, he’s also in Chinese club. AP Physics won’t stop giving him homework. He’s fallen into academic compromise.
