Basically a hipster but the pretense is not directed towards single-origin coffee or obscure music, but towards "geeky" shit. A lot of the promoters of this stem from corporate cynicism that is thinly disguised by using attractive front-runners like Felicia Day and moderately annoying douchebags like Wil Wheaton. You can tell because geek chic is all these people are - it's a brand and they are wearing it to market it to you. Typically these people have nothing interesting about them at all, but will nevertheless try to force you to think they are cool or interesting by how many tabletop board games, RPGs, and Magic the Gathering cards they have.

When a person or company reaches a foregone, usually emotionally-driven conclusion, and then rationalizes their actions with backwards logic in order to justify their loopy bullshit. Hamstering occurs when people arrive at a conclusion first, and then look for reasons to justify what they already believe.
