Leviticus 18:22
One of the most endlessly litigated verses in the entire Bible/Torah. The plain Hebrew reads something like “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is *to‘evah* (an abomination (or *taboo* in the original Hebrew)).” For centuries this has been treated as the definitive divine ban on gay sex. Closer reading of the chapter, however, places the prohibition squarely inside the land-covenant terms given to Israel for life *inside* the Promised Land (Lev 18:1–5, 24–30). It is part of a localized purity code designed to keep Israel from adopting the sexual practices of Egypt and Canaan while they occupied that specific territory.
Nothing in the surrounding text extends the statute to Gentiles living outside the land, nor does it convert it into a universal moral absolute for every culture and era. Once that covenantal and geographic context is taken seriously, the verse loses its claimed authority to declare gay sex a “sin” or “abomination” for the vast majority of people who have ever lived.
