Logical Generativity

The capacity of a logical system to produce an infinite number of valid inferences from finite premises—the property that underlies creativity in reasoning, theorem‑proving, and argumentation. Logical generativity allows thinkers to go beyond given information, to derive novel conclusions, and to generate new questions. It is the engine of intellectual productivity, but it can also produce infinite chains of reasoning that lead nowhere, as in formal systems that generate arbitrary theorems.

Philosophical Recursion

A self‑referential structure in philosophical argument where a concept is applied to itself—e.g., the concept of “meaning” applied to the meaning of “meaning,” or a critique of critique applied to the critique itself. Philosophical recursion is both a tool for deepening analysis and a source of paradox (as in the liar paradox). In online philosophy circles, it often appears as a game of one‑upmanship: each participant reframes the debate at a higher level until the original question is buried.

Rational Recursion

The application of rational standards to rationality itself—asking whether one’s standards of rationality are themselves rational, and whether that meta‑standard is rational, leading to an infinite chain. Rational recursion is often used to challenge foundationalist claims in epistemology, showing that any justification for reason must either be circular, regressive, or dogmatic. In practical discourse, it appears when someone demands a rational justification for trusting reason, leading to a paradox.
