Dialectical Scientific Method

A scientific approach that treats contradiction and conflict as engines of discovery rather than obstacles to be eliminated. Drawing from Hegelian dialectics, this method assumes that every thesis (a hypothesis) generates its antithesis (competing evidence or interpretation), and progress comes from the synthesis that resolves the tension—only for that synthesis to become a new thesis facing its own antithesis. It's science as an endless argument that actually goes somewhere. Unlike the linear "hypothesis-test-conclude" model, the Dialectical Method expects to be wrong, incorporates opposition as fuel, and understands that truth emerges from the clash of partial perspectives rather than from a single clean experiment.

Hard Problem of Reality

The ultimate existential headache: what is reality, really? Not just what's in it, but what it is. Is reality physical matter? Mental construction? Information? Simulation? Mathematical structure? The Hard Problem is that every answer generates more questions. If reality is physical, what are thoughts? If reality is mental, what are rocks? If reality is information, what's the substrate? Science pushes back the frontier of explanation but never reaches the final answer—it tells us how reality behaves, not what it is. The Hard Problem of Reality is that we're inside the thing trying to understand the thing, with no outside view available.

If truth is pragmatic usefulness, useful for whom and for what? The Hard Problem is that every definition of objective truth seems to sneak in subjective assumptions, leaving us wondering whether "objective truth" is a real thing we're approximating or a useful fiction that keeps us honest.

When does speculative biology become pseudobiology? The problem is that science and pseudoscience exist on a spectrum, with no single magic criterion—falsifiability, peer review, empirical method—that perfectly separates them in all cases. Astrology is easy to dismiss, but what about string theory, which makes no testable predictions? What about Freudian psychology, which is culturally influential but methodologically dubious? The Hard Problem is that demarcation is itself a scientific and philosophical puzzle with no universally accepted solution.

Absolute and Relative Truths

A companion distinction to Absolute/Relative Facts, but focused on propositions rather than brute reality. Absolute Truths are statements that correspond to reality in a way that transcends all perspectives, contexts, and frameworks. "2+2=4" is an Absolute Truth in arithmetic. Relative Truths are statements that are true within a particular framework but not necessarily outside it. "Stealing is wrong" might be true within a moral framework but isn't a brute fact about the universe. The confusion arises when people insist their Relative Truths are Absolute, or when they use the existence of Relative Truth to deny that any Absolute Truth exists at all.
