freeter

an adult, though no longer a student, who does not have full-time employment and all the benefits that comes with it. Instead, a freeter chooses to work part-time or hold down odd jobs, even while full time employment is available.

Being a freeter means having more flexibility and freedom than someone with a permanent job. Freeters usually do not earn enough money to have their own home, so they often stay at home with their parents indefinitely, or else rent rooms in others' homes.
In today's economy, it's hard to know if a part-time employee is a freeloader or freeter, or is simply struggling to survive.

After years of living a boring life, working 9-to-5 on the East Coast matrix, he relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he traded his car for a bicycle and started earning a living with his acoustic guitar.

A phrase describing two individuals who have very little to nothing in common, in terms of personalities, interests, opinions and/or beliefs. A softer way to say that two people are generally uncomfortable in each other's presence and because of the resulting tensions are unlikely ever to get along or even be able to stand one another.

Although he'd written a few catchy songs in his heyday, he attracted little fanfare and hung up his guitar after deciding that in the world of music, he hadn't been destined to become anything more than a never-was.

college

where dreamers can go to secure a plan B for their future employment prospects
Jenny always wanted to be a singer-songwriter, but her parents persuaded her to choose English as a college major, for a fallback plan. She later married a 1950s-style brute who orders her to edit all of his work-related documents and to have dinner on the table by five every night. Life can be so tragic sometimes.
