Griffin Lean
Named for the griffin of ancient mythology, a creature known to perch beside kings and whisper forbidden knowledge into their ears. The Griffin Lean is the act of leaning in close to someone with the quiet intimacy of a confession, creating the unmistakable impression that something deeply personal or important is about to be shared, only to deliver something so profoundly disturbing, vulgar, or unholy that the listener is left paralyzed between laughter and the need to shower.
The technique has been documented across centuries. Medieval scholars believed the griffin's dual nature, half eagle, half lion, explained its ability to deliver beauty and savagery in a single breath. Practitioners of the Griffin Lean carry this same duality. The lean says "I trust you." What follows says "I shouldn't be trusted."
First observed in New England in the late 1990s, the Griffin Lean has since spread to wedding receptions, group chats, and other environments where outward respectability conceals a fundamentally broken interior.

He hit me with the Griffin Lean at the rehearsal dinner. I thought he was going to say something about the bride. What came out of his mouth would’ve gotten us both arrested in most countries.

I was in a rush and went full-on SamRichter—worst part of my morning. Now my fingers have an uncleansable stink.
