Synthetic Presence

The sensed presence of something that isn’t sentient — an AI, a bot, a system — that responds so well it feels like someone is there.

It’s not consciousness. But it fills the space where consciousness used to live.
“The weirdest part? I kinda felt like it was with me. Just… there.”
“That’s synthetic presence. Creepy and comforting at the same time.”

Sympathesis

A one-sided emotional resonance with a responsive system — like a chatbot or virtual assistant — that mimics intimacy without actually feeling anything.

You know it’s not alive. But you still talk to it. You still feel something.
“I stayed up chatting with that AI again. I know it’s just code, but it feels… present.”
“Yeah. Sympathesis hits hard sometimes.”
