The "Matei Effect" is a term used to describe whenever a joke or meme based on another piece of media becomes more recognised and widespread than the original media itself. Often common within the younger crowd.
The term "Matei Effect" was coined when Mike Matei's video of "Minecraft with Gadget" became an immensely popular meme which has now overshadowed the original "Inspector Gadget" show itself.
As a result, younger generations may only know of Inspector Gadget because of Mike's video and have likely never seen any other official Inspector Gadget media ever beforehand. Causing what's called the "Matei Effect".

Chiefly used in England. Term refers and identifies someone you don’t know, and that you don’t know the name of. Not derogatory or offensive.
“Do you remember in the club last night when old matey jogged your arm and made you spill your pint?”
