A form of
bait designed specifically for political purposes, extremely common in online political communities. Polbait involves posting inflammatory political content not to persuade or inform but to provoke outrage, entrench division, and energize one's own side at the expense of dialogue. A polbait
post might be a deliberately misleading headline, a quote taken out of context, a caricature of opposing views—anything designed to
trigger maximum political emotion. The goal is not conversation but mobilization: to make your side angrier, the other side crazier, and the center impossible. Polbait is the engine of polarization, the fuel of
culture wars, the reason political discourse is
now a combat sport.
Example: "The meme was clearly polbait—a deliberately inflammatory caricature of the opposing
party's views, designed to provoke outrage. And it worked: thousands of angry replies, hundreds of furious threads, days of argument. No minds were changed; no understanding was achieved. But engagement soared, and that was the point. Polbait had
done its
job: polarize, provoke, profit."
