Alternative Rock

An umbrella term used to describe a style of music that emerged in the late 80's and early 90's. Alternative Rock is usually characterized by bands who have a "do-it-yourself" or non-conformist attitude; hence "alternative".

It originated with the jangle pop guitar sounds of R.E.M. and the loud/soft dynamic of the Pixies and gained popularity when Nirvana brought it into the mainstream with their album Nevermind. Ironically, it became probably the most popular music of the time period, which was a paradox of sorts in itself -- although purposely anti-mainstream and "against the norm", it became commonplace for people to conform to non-conformity.

Today, the term is often thrown around by people who don't really understand what it means and think that it can be applied to any band of their choosing. This is not true -- for a band to be truly Alternative, they have to follow the Alternative mindset; that is, they must either perform in a style of Alternative Rock already established (see Grunge or Britpop) or be avant-garde and completely throw what it considered usual or average out the window.

The name is often wrongly associated with "Modern Rock". This is wrong because whereas Alternative Rock is a genre and follows a specific style, Modern Rock is a radio format and simply refers recent bands.

Note: discrepancies with categorizing bands as "Alternative Rock" come from the fact that most Alternative bands fit easily into an Alternative Rock subgenre (Nirvana - Grunge, Modest Mouse - Indie) and can be classified as either the subgenre or "Alternative Rock" in general; if a band covers more than one style instead of sticking to one in particular, they are usually just called "Alternative Rock".

It was ironic that Alternative Rock became as popular as it did, considering its entire purpose was to be the opposite of what everyone wanted to hear.

When someone, specifically the leaders of the United States, tell a flat out lie to convince their supporters of how great they are, but don't want to admit that they are actually total fuck ups and have no idea what they are doing.

A way of phasing a lie that everyone knows to be untrue.

(In regards to the size of Trump's innaguration) Kelly Anne Conway. "Sean Spicer, our press secretary gave... alternative facts to that."

Normal People. "I hate how all Trump does is lie and speak false hoods."
Trump supporters. "He isn't lying, he is just using alternative facts."

Alternative Facts 

1. When you know what you're saying is bullshit but you're going to present it as your version of reality anyways even if it is contrary to first hand accounts, photographic evidence, reputable reporting sources, and verifiable numbers given by things such as ticket sales or public transportation data

2. An attempt to gaslight the population in an effort to control the media and create propoganda by substituting something beneficial to the regime instead of reporting verifiable truths that paint a negative light on a subject.

"In an interview on NBC's 'Meet the Press,' host Chuck Todd pressed Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway about why the White House on Saturday had sent Spicer to the briefing podium for the first time to claim that 'this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period.'

The opposite of facts. Historically, alternative facts were reffered to as lies.

Alternative facts, a spin on classical facts, are all the rage in America right now. These so called "facts" will be used repeatedly by republicans, Kellyanne Conway, and trumpsters throughout the presidency of Trump, however long that turns out to be.

Alternative Lifestyle Haircut 

alternative lifestyle haircut (n) – A haircut or style that indicates its owner leads a life contrary to that of the conservative or heterosexual world. Also known as “the significant lesbian haircut,” the acquiring of an alternative lifestyle haircut is often seen as a rite of passage into lesbian adulthood, even if it is not maintained after the initial cut. Like a bat mitzvah, but on your head. Examples include: the mohawk, the fauxhawk, the mullet, the sidesweep, and the Tegan and Sara.

The term was coined by Autostraddle.com and has since become a common collloquialism.

1.) Jess just came out and, after going to her first Tegan and Sara concert, got an alternative lifestyle haircut similar to Tegan's.

2.) Once Leah added an alternative lifestyle haircut to her outfit composed of American Apparel and a skinny tie, she became infinitely more attractive.
