Like it's popular synonym, senoritis (which literally means "inflammation of the senior"), this word describes the lack of motivation experienced by high school seniors during their second semester, as they await college acceptances and have little impetus to continue applying themselves to their school work. This word owes it's existence to the word atrophy, which means he gradual decline of effectiveness or vigor due to underuse or neglect: Seniors' neglect of their school work leads to it's decline
