A type of sub-genre, or even a song, that is most likely antiestablishment, and reckless. The first real punk band,(mainly from their actions, not as much in their music) was The Who. Their most popular nickname is "The Godfathers of Punk". Their first punk song was "My Generation", which had a new sound considering the fact that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were still writing love songs at the time.

The real punk generation developed in the 1980's with bands like Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, and so on. The real sound to punk developed into fast tempo, aggressive music.
"Dude, The Who was NOT a punk band"

"The drummer exploded hotel toilets with cherry bombs and played drums like an engine, even when he added several more to his kit. The guitarist was the first guy to smash his instruments, and the bassist was the first to do bass solos."

1. A hardcore and faster form of rock made famous by the genre of music garage rock or mod.

punk music was an underground form of rock in North America and Australia in the early to mid 1970's while it became a sensation in the UK.

In the later 1970's a new form of punk emerged. This was a more hardcore and anti social version of punk rock starting a rivalry between old school punk fans and a much younger crowd of hardcore punk rock.

In the late 1970's and early 1980's an even newer era of punk began. That being New Wave. This was a different kind of punk. One because most people did not call their music punk rock any more but instead New wave. This era included bands such as Talking heads, Blondie and The police.

The next wave of punk rock comes in the 1990's to present. This wave of punk includes bands such as Nirvana, Bad religion, Green Day, the offspring and many more bands. Also screamo is another sub genre of punk. Screamo and emo are the most current sub genre of punk.

2. Punk. A lifestyle not a trend.
Somebody wants to know what punk is. He notices that I have a skate board and like green day. Three months later he talkes to me again and says I learned to skate am I punk now? And I say no your a poser.

A movement started in the 70s by bands like the Sex Pistols, Ramomes, Casualties, Clash, Runaways, Dead Kennedys, Mc5, Misfits etc. Grunge, a form of punk include bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains etc. which is also punk sort of. The genre is bassically a faster paced form of rock bordered on rebellion. Now punk is being ruined by bands like Good Charlotte, Blink182, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne etc. who try so much to be punk up to the extent where it becomes incredibly unpunk. In my opinion they should just be themselves and not try so hard. The stereotyped style for the punk rockers include thing and accessories like studded belts, tattoos, multicolored hair, body peircings, mohawks, practically any article of clothing colored black etc. But any true punk rocker would know you don't have to dress the part to be the part. Real punk rock bands are hard to find these days, Green Day sold out when they changed their sound so it could appeall more to the masses.

People throw this word around a lot to define a guy who has said or done something to piss them off. For the record, in such a situation a "punk" would be a guy who verbally disrespects or deliberately commits a menacing act toward another. However, he is not a "punk" until that person calls him out as in an invitation to fight and the so called "punk" backs down. At this point he truly is a PUNK!
The only way to demonstrate punk behavior is to call the person out after an act of disrespect has been committed. If he is a coward and backs down, he is branded a punk. "Jimmy is a punk because he wouldn't fight Johnny."

* PLEASE NOTE this entry IS NOT meant to encourage or incite violence toward others as it is meant to clarify a common misconception among people who frequently use this word without regard to it's proper meaning and within the right context.

Okay being a punk is not conforming to mainstream and being yourself. Punk is being what you wanna be. If you think it looks cool WEAR IT. You do not need to have a mohawk or liberty spikes you need to have different hair to everyone else. The most important part of punk is listening to punk rock music and also metal. Bands like "the sex pistols", "the exploited", "Vice squad" and "The ramones". Bands like "Avril Lavigne", "Good charlotte" and "blink 182" are not punk. Then there is politics. Having a tattoo with the cross sickel and hammer if you live in the US is good. It doesnt matter if you not a commie you just need to shock people. Basically do, say and listen to things that will shock people
Desmond is a punk he listens to old punk and metal, his favourite song is Anarchy in the UK and he wears a denim jacket with patches on, army boots and bondage trousers. His hair goes down his back and its teased and spiked

Justin is not a punk he listens to Screamo and emotional hardcore. His favourite song is knives and pens. He writes poetry, wears a tight MCR tee, skinny jeans (black) and old trainers, has black fingernails, eye liner and black hair put over one eye
