mercurachrome

A mercury-bromine compound used as a germicide for disinfection of the skin and wounds. It has been outlawed in the U.S.A. by the FDA for years, although non-mercury types are still available.
Neosporin and other antibitoic ointments are used today much like Mercurachrome was many years ago.
