A member of the beat counterculture, or one who lives a beat lifestyle. Similar to a hippie. The term comes from Jack Kerouac's book "The Dharma Bums." (Japhy is the name of a character, modeled after Kerouac’s friend Gary Snyder.)

From Jack Kerouac's book "The Dharma Bums" a Japhy is an enlightened poet and mountain man. A Japhy is considered by itself or others to be a true Bodhisattva.

Japhy is the most amazing person who is better then everyone else you should be friends with him if you aren’t then you actually suck you need him or else your die alone and will never have any friends he is as awesome as it gets and you have to like him other wise jesus will steal your soul he is the best and if you him be with home for ever he is awesome so be his friend
