The opposite of equity. The amount you owe on your house in excess of its current market value thanks to the burst of the housing bubble.

Joe: As bad as the economy is here, maybe it is time to move out of state.

Herb: I have 50K in home debtquity, I'll be living in my current house until I die, maybe longer.

Dequity

Dequity (n.) — capital that sits between debt and equity: it carries a fixed obligation like debt (interest, a repayment schedule, or a preferred return) while also granting an ownership claim or share of the upside like equity. Neither purely a loan nor purely a stake, but a hybrid that lets a lender behave like an owner and an owner get paid like a lender.

“Rather than dilute the founders with a priced round, the fund structured $5M in dequity — a 9% coupon plus warrants for 4% of the company at exit.”
