baby-bat

A baby bat is a person who has discovered Goth, but is unfamiliar with the scene. They often listen to Goth music, and have distinctive 'Goth' tastes (an interest in the occult, macabre acadaemia, a love for the Victorian/Georgian societies) but haven't yet become acclimatised to being non-mainstream.

Baby bats are distinctive from emos in both personality and dress sense. Though the bats often use heavy make-up, they wear more tartan and netting/tulle than emos and are more stereotypically Goth. It takes a keen eye to distinguish some emos from baby bats, but there is one difference:

Baby bats grow up into Goths. Emos grow out of the fad, and into accountants.
a) "Check that emo!" "That's not an emo, that's a baby-bat." "How can you tell?" "She's got a Bauhaus patch. No emo listens to Bauhaus."

baby-bat

A person that is new to the Gothic scene and is unfamiliar with the Gothic culture.
In her caked on white clown make-up and Hot Topic dress, it was obvious that Jennifer was a baby-bat.

Baby Bat

Nooby to the goth culture. Usually identifyable by overdone clown makeup, Marilyn Manson/Slipknot/Korn tee shirts, and token Wiccanism.
Is that a Goth?
Not yet, she's just a baby-bat.

baby bat

A derogatory term used for describing someone new to the goth lifestyle; usually confused about what it is. The term can be interchanged with poseur. A baby bat is typically someone, from the age of 13-19, attempting to become part of goth culture. Led by the misconceptions of mainstream media and the public in general, a baby bat will assume goth is something it isn't. Only a few baby bats will come to pierce the superficiality and evolve into true gothdom.
Man, look all the baby bats at this MCR concert!

Quiet! I'm sure they'll cut themselves if we tell them they're not goth!

baby bat

Baby bats are usually a new-comer to the gothic world or just a little brat trying to become goth.
A baby bat is what most of the over twenty goths call the younger goths, especially the poser ones, whos soul intent is to destory the gothic name.
"Look deary, that child is trying to be goth."
"What a pity, these baby bats are killing their sterotypes."

Baby bat

A derogatory term for those wannabe Gothics who are only familiar with the superficial aspects of the culture. They may do their makeup horribly and only listen to the most popular of the goth bands. They are mostly the younger kids going through a phase and trying to look cool. However people tend to fling this label at anyone they don't like. A lot of people prefer not to use the label because it implies a "more gothic than thou" attitude.
