awkquaintance

An especially awkward relationship between two people who were once really, really close but suddenly stopped talking to each other for one reason or another. This could be due to a breakup, backstabbing, argument, etc.

Signs of an awkquaintance include never talking to each other, awkward smiles in the hallway, and avoiding each other whenever possible.

Selena: Hey, I heard about your breakup with Joe. Are you guys still friends?
Demi: Not really. More like awkquaintances.

Selena: Oh, that sucks.

Demi: Yeah. OMG, here he comes, let's get out of here!

Someone you only speak to on aim, but not in real life.

The proper place to consider an ex-lover after a bad break up. Should not be confused with the friend zone.

After she got over her anger about our break up, Nancy wanted to remain friends. But I think it's a better idea to keep her in my polite acquaintance zone.

Cool Guy Acquaintance

A person that you're not really friends with but you're cool enough to go up to them and shake their hand and say "Sup, bro".

Roxy: Ya I'm not actually friends with Keith were just Cool Guy Acquaintances.

awkwaintance

A person with whom you are insufficiently acquainted to either make easy small talk or enjoy a comfortable silence. An "awkwaintance" is often the friend of a friend; he or she is promoted to the position of "awkwaintance" when the mutual friend leaves you two alone.

(Ash and Gary are at dinner. Brock walks up.)

Ash: Oh, hey, it's Brock! What's going on, man! This is Gary; Gary, Brock. Join us, Brock!

(Brock joins.)
(10 minutes later.)

Ash: Sorry, I have to go be somewhere by myself for an unspecified length of time. Later, guys!

(Gary and Brock, newly made awkwaintances, finish their meals in uncomfortable silence, punctuated by disjointed small talk and uneasy chuckling.)
