Top definition
The Japanese's minimalist approach to solving a math word problem, with the aim to use as few steps as possible to yield an elegant or creative solution.
A Sakamoto math solution to the grade five rate problem below uses two instead of the traditional three steps.

Problem: Beth was walking 6 km ahead of Ann, who caught up with Beth in 3 hours. If Ann's speed was 10 km/h, find Beth's speed.

Solution: To make up for the extra 6 km in 3 hrs, Ann needed to walk 2 km more than Beth every hour, or Ann's speed was 2 km/h faster than that of Beth.

Since Ann's speed was 10 km/h, Beth's speed must be (10 – 2) = 8 km/h.
