Gay Label is used to describe men and women attracted to the same sex, though lesbian is the more common term for women. Preferred over homosexual except in clinical contexts or references to sexual activity.
Though the gay label is commonly used, there are those who reject being labelled gay. Filmmaker John Mulholland, like others in such as fashionand the arts, is an out and open gay man, who yet rejects being labeled gay. The gay label would slot him as gay artist, rather than an artist who happens to be gay. Mulholland does not want to be referred to as the gay writer or gay director or gay New Yorker by the New York Times when it reviews his work; rather, simply the New Yorker who wrote and directed the work.
