When two people care a lot about each other, but aren't ready, or don't feel strong enough to declare that they "love" each other, they can declare they boofa du as an alternative but less strongly insulated statement. It still expresses the deep attachment and bond that two people hold, and that the two mean a lot to each other, just not to the extent of declaring "love" to someone.
