Refers to the covetous reaction of an individual when he or she realizes that their current writing implement is inferior to that of a classmate or coworker.

If unrepressed this realization can result in scheming behaviour such as "pen pinching".

Man, I had serious pen envy yesterday when I spotted Stan's stylin new rollerball.
