it's a term used to name the music style of bands like Green Day, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, or Simple Plan.
This bands were influenced by the skatepunk bands like Bad Religion, Nofx, Pennywise, etc. They made the songs catchier so it would become more listenable to the mainstream audience therefore more popular. That's where the name pop-punk comes from.
Being mainstream music has caused the rejection of this music by other punkrockers who are against the mainstream and corporate music.
Nowadays pop-punk is influating other bands to create new styles of music like rock-pop or new hardcore-pop better known to the audience as emo music

Pop punk: A species located throughout North America. Can be found indoors, for they avoid the sun. You'll often find them in FYE or hot topic, and can be lured in if you throw a flower crown towards them. Their appearances consist of pale skin and pastel hair colors. A creepy black line lines their eyelid, usually thick and uneven. They avoid human contact and often speak dark works that are incomprehensible for the non pop punk species. Beware, they avoid species of the BASIC kind.

A Pretty good type of music that most "Real" punks look down upon just because it doesent live up to Punks standards. And yes, I agree with them. Most pop punk is a pile of shit. But there is alot of really good Pop Punk out there that is Loud, fast, fun and rebelious. But it is basicly just a more melodic and catchier type of punk rock.
Good Pop Punk: Descendents, NOFX, (old) Green Day, Lagwagon, Screeching Weasal, (Old) Blink 182, Ramones, The Offspring, (Old) Mxpx, Rancid, The Buzzcocks, The Sidekicks, etc
Bull Shit Pop punk: Simple Plan, Paramore, Fall out boy, We the Kings, Boys like Girls, (New) Blink 182, New found glory, good charlotte, Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, etc

Screeching Weasel, The Queers, Mr. T Experience, The Descendents, The Ramones, Bouncing Souls, and the Teen Idols are pop-punk. Blink 182, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, and New Found Glory are not.
