A backronym for “tip” or gratuity. Tipping can be seen as a way of thanking a person for good services, so “thanks in pay” works pretty well.
The waiter was friendly and attentive, so I thanked him with a good tip.

‘never thanks’ has a similar meaning to ‘no thanks’, it differs in the way that it is a permanent refusal of something or someone offered. Often used as a sarcastic response to something unwanted.
