The word is often translated as "god," but it's way more complex than that. A Kami isn't a bearded guy sitting on a cloud. It can be a major mythological figure like Amaterasu (the sun goddess), but it can also be a sacred force found in nature—like a majestic mountain (Mount Fuji), an ancient tree, a beautiful waterfall, or even the spirit of a legendary historical person.
Thanks to anime like Naruto, Noragami, and Studio Ghibli films (Spirited Away), the concept of Kami has a massive global fanbase. In the lore, Kami aren't inherently good or bad; they are just powerful forces of nature. If you treat them with respect, purify yourself, and keep their shrines (Jinja) clean, they bring blessings. If you disrespect nature and ignore them, they turn into chaotic spirits (Aragitama) and bring disaster.
