A genre of music that is slightly hard-core, maybe a small amount of screaming or shouting. Emo is not a type of person that wears dark clothes and dark make-up. Emo is also not a person that self-harms, or whom is depressed.

Emo is short for Emo-core which was a joke made by a band in the 1980's, which was then abbreviated to Emo. A girl killed herself and a writer for the Daily Mail said that the music was influential to her death and she was "Emo".

Correct:
Person 1: I love this song
Person 2: Yeah, it's in the Emo genre, right?

Wrong:
Person 1: Wow, what's with the dark make-up and stuff?
Person 2: She's such an Emo.

Emo is a genre of post-hardcore and alternative rock with more melancholy arrangements and more emotionally driven themes. The name of the genre is a shortening of Emocore which itself is a shortening of Emotional Hardcore. The genre is also known for its expansive subculture, which is associated black clothing, long dyed hair, black eyeliner, bangs, and white makeup.
Emo is often mistakenly conflated with Gothic Rock, Pop Punk, Melodic Hardcore, Alternative Metal, and Shoegaze.
