Emo was a genre of music that developed out of the failing straight edge movement, especially in the DC area when bands such as Minor Threat and Bad Brains began to lose popularity.
These bands decided to take the energy of punk rock but without the anger, creating emo. Bands include: rites of spring, indian summer, some fugazi, ect. During emos height (84-87), it was generally very emotional, fast, and powerful music. Eventually, it became influenced by pop (much like punk) and is what it is today. It has also become a term to describe someone who is depressed and overly emotional, generally for attention.

I was wondering how Rites of Spring and My Chemical Romance are both labeled Emo and are completely different.

So he was always telling the people near him how he felt. He let his hair grow long then one day decided to go get it cut. He sat down in the barbers chair and started telling his storys.
