A social trend of the early to mid 2000s. Characterized by angsty teenagers, mainly from middle class suburban families, dressing in tight pants (often girl jeans), studded belts, black band t-shirts, and heavy use of eye liner with dark straightened hair with crispy bangs meant to cover one eye.
Music tastes tend to be a form of rock characterized by whiny depressed lyrics about some deep seeded emotional issue.
The Emo trend gave rise to toxic social media where dealing with insecurity meant creating an embellished internet personality to appeal to the masses rather than actually learning to love and accept yourself for who you really are.
The Emo era ended sometime in the late 2000s when Myspace began giving way to Facebook. The fashion and music tastes died out but the general attitude of "depression is cool" remained to this day.

My girlfriend has been acting really immature and completely emo lately. I wish she would just start her period and get over it

Get the Emomug. I know there are a lot of definitions for emo but most of them suck and make fun of emos. An emo is someone who hates themselves and puts themselves down, they feel more emotion than anyone writing these sucky definitions. They can't control their pain so that makes them feel as though they have to hurt themselves even more. It's like feeling like shit and wanting to get drunk, instead of getting drunk they chose to cut or burn themselves. They think that everyone hates them and they don't deserve to live and a lot of emos will end up killing themselves. Take this from someone who's gone through this before, it's not just a genre of music or something to be made fun of, it's a real thing mostly associated with depression. And It's not that they don't feel emotion, they feel too much emotion and it overwhelms them.

Get the Goth/emomug. The cousin to the Goths, the shy Emo is an interesting and not very well documented species as they tend to hide in their nests. What we do know about them, however, is that they came in many different subspecies that have their own way of living.
It is a miscommunication through what scientists theorized as a translation error that Emos are sad pieces of shit that self harm and wallow in self sorrow all the time, but this is far from the truth. Yes one of the subspecies do tend to self harm and have a higher suicide rate, but there's many others that have happy and healthy lifes and just tend to use the Emo lifestyle.
The sad fact is though, that the Emo population has decreased do to their habitats, band concerts such as My Chemical Romance, being taken away, or more commonly referred to as 'disbanded.' They still have some mating sites like Hot Topic and Panic! At the Disco, but that doesn't change their alarming population change. Scientists theorize that one of the reasons is do to the miscommunication stated above.
When finding a mate to add to their friend group, the Emos use a special mating call that usually sounds like this:
'When I was a young boy...'
'The groom's bride is a...'
'Can you save my heavydirtysoul...'

"I feel bad for my little girl. She hides in her room and listens to *whispers* emo. I think she might be self harming or even suicidal."
"You're kidding, right? Just because she plays Fall Out Boy and Panic! At-"
"And the Pilots and Chemical Romances."
"Twenty One Pilots and My Chemical Romance. But just because of her music choice or her clothing style doesn't mean shit. Even then, crying to sad music or movies or whatever can be a good and healthy outlet if she is sad or depressed."
