Someone who is in the middle of a situation who is in a position to know exactly what is or was going on.

Someone who is on the volcano would have a better idea if an eruption is about to happen versus someone who is away from the mountain.

I know exactly what happened yesterday. You weren't there. I was. I was the volcanologist on the mountain.
