Literally short for parents, pa-RENTS! Now you know.

"Hey you wanna go for dinner tonight"
"Nah mate would be nice but can't, promised my rents I'd meet up with them"

The way a friend (especially a more annoying one) earns your friendship for a period of time, usually with a good deed or a funny moment.

That was probably the funniest thing he’s said in a while. That’s his friend rent for the week.
