Ampalaya

1. The Filipino term for the vegetable bitter melon. Aside from being consumed for nourishment, it is taken as a herbal medicine in the Philippines.

2. Because of its bitter taste, ampalaya is often referred to when describing an embittered experience.

Kasing pait ng ampalaya ang buhay ko sa dati kong asawa. (My life was as bitter as an ampalaya with my former wife)
