To speak against a statement you know is misleading and can be easily misconstrued from actual intentions, or sounds too good to be true. Used commonly for political polishing (pc).

The game where you see a white object during the winter time and kick it. If it explodes, it was snow. If you end up with a few broken toes, it was ice.
