7.62x39mm

A Soviet intermediate rifle cartridge inspired by America's .30 Carbine and Nazi Germany's 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridges and designed for the SKS and RPD. It was later used in the AK-47 (and all the clones of it made by every communist country ever), AKM, RPK, Vz.58, Rk62, Rk95, Valmet M78, Galil, Ruger Mini-30, AK-103 and 104, and AK-12, among others (every 2nd World country and many 3rd World countries adopted it as their main service rifle round because the Soviets told them to, and many civilians love to buy semi-auto surplus or civilian-legal original versions of the guns mentioned above). It is comparable in power to the .30-30 Winchester and is therefore an excellent round for hunting deer. It is analogous to the 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Winchester, but much less powerful. The top 3 users of 7.62x39mm are (former) Communists, terrorists, and right-wing Americans (simply because they are way too obsessed with the movie Red Dawn).

The USSR officially replaced the 7.62x39mm cartridge with the 5.45x39mm in 1974, but it is still used by urban Russian police forces and sometimes used for special operations (with the AKM or AK103/AK104, NEVER with the AK-47 anymore) because it penetrates light cover better than 5.45 (at the cost of lower accuracy and range, however).
Most people believe the 7.62x39mm is most effective when fired into the air wildly while screaming, but this isn't necessarily the case.

626

Area code of the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles. Collection of diverse suburbs, people of all classes and races live there. Today, the majority of people living in the 626 are Hispanic and Asian. Whites are also a significant percent of the population, they used to be much larger in numbers before white flight took hold in the 80s. The Black population is strikingly low compared to other areas of Los Angeles. The majority of the 626 is considered middle to working class. Although, many wealthy and poor neighborhoods exist. Once staunchly Republican, this area has become increasingly Democratic as Hispanics and Asians shifted their alligances to the Democratic party in reseponse to perscieved racism from the California GOP to Hispanics and inaction by establishment to Asian concerns following the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
The 625 is the area code, damn it.

7.62

As stated, the AK-47 and FN-FAL/SLR both have barrels of calibre 7.62mm. However, the 2 weapons fire totally incompatible cartridges. The FN-FAL/SLR used the 7.62x51 NATO cartridge whereas the AK-47 used the shorter 7.62x39 Soviet cartridge.

The NATO cartidge is more powerful and has greater range (hence it has often been used in machine guns such as the BREN and GPMG/FN-MAG, and in sniper rifles sucn as the SR-25), however the less powerful Soviet cartridge is more effective at wounding/killing a human at typical combat ranges (less than 400m).
A shot from a 7.62x51 SLR at close range would typically go straight through the target and out the other side, doing minimal damage and transferring little monentum to the target. A shot from an 7.62x39 AK-47 will tumble inside the target, doing considerable damage and transferring all of its monentum to the target.

7.62x51mm NATO

One of NATO's military firearm calibers. The 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge is often used in allied (American, UK, German, French, etc) machine guns, sniper rifles, and even a few assault rifles (such as Heckler & Koch's G3A3).
The civilian 7.62x51mm NATO round is the .308 Winchester.
