A member of the scent hound family of dogs. They are known for their very long ears, adorable sad expression, and talentled nose. A basset's sense of smell is second only to the bloodhound. They have very long ears, a prominent haw (which gives them droopy looking eyes), and short little legs. They usually weigh 50-70 lbs. The basset hound was initially bred for hunting rabbits. Basset means "low set" in french.
Bassets are very sweet, kind-hearted dogs. They love everyone and everything and will drag you to say hello to everyone they see (or smell!). They have the traditional hound stubborness, but owners love them for it! This determination to get their way is often comical. They are not the dog for you if you demand a dog's undivided attention or obedience, but are the perfect dog for someone who will love them to pieces and have a sense of humor about their antics.

Did you see Bassnectar at Camp Bisco? The only thing on par with an actual Bassnectar show is seeing a HUGE mass of people going nuts at 4:30 in the afternoon... horrible set time, and it didn't matter at all. That place went NUTS.

The balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to move with ease and agility. The Basenji hunts by both sight and scent. Characteristics--The Basenji should not bark but is not mute. The wrinkled forehead, tightly curled tail and swift, effortless gait (resembling a racehorse trotting full out) are typical of the breed.
Ideal height for dogs is 17 inches and bitches 16 inches. Dogs 17 inches and bitches 16 inches from front of chest to point of buttocks. Approximate weight for dogs, 24 pounds and bitches, 22 pounds. Lightly built within this height to weight ratio.
The head is proudly carried. Eyes--Dark hazel to dark brown, almond shaped, obliquely set and farseeing.
Wrinkles appear upon the forehead when ears are erect, and are fine and profuse. Side wrinkles are desirable, but should never be exaggerated into dewlap.
Neck of good length, well crested and slightly full at base of throat. Well set into shoulders. Topline--Back level. Body--Balanced with a short back, short coupled and ending in a definite waist. Ribs moderately sprung, deep to elbows and oval. Slight forechest in front of point of shoulder. Chest of medium width.
