Going all in against an apparently weaker opponent, only to get your arse kicked to the point that it's hanging out of your trousers

A red herring that is so absurd as to alert the listener that the speaker is telling a lie. Oftentimes the lie is told when telling the truth would be simple but slightly uncomfortable.
Friend 1: Are we still on for coffee?
Friend 2: No, there is something I have to tell you.
Friend 1: What is it?
Friend 2: I have cancer...
Friend 1: Are you pulling a Melville?
Boyfriend: There is something I need to tell you.
Girlfiend: What?
Boyfriend: I am sexually attracted to men.
Girlfriend: Are you pulling a Melville, we can just break up you know?
Friend 2: No, there is something I have to tell you.

When someone was present for an awesome event but missed seeing it, who later, after hearing the story, retells the story to others as if they actually saw said event.
I decided to Pull a Duffy when I missed seeing the lesbians making out at IHOP at the table behind me.

Mindy: I'm so excited about our sleepover this weekend
Jill: Me too! You me and Kaitlyn and no Victoria.
Victoria: Oh that sounds like fun, when is it? My mom can pick us up afterward.
Mindy(to Jill): Ohmygod, Victoria totally just pulled a trainor on us!

Irene is the Romanian deity of procrastination, "pulling an Irene" means leaving something for the last minute and not doing it anyway, usually coming up with a lame excuse not to do something one should or was expected to do.
Originally a popular saying in Romania and loosely translated and popularised by the Romanian community in the UK.

When your friend cancels coming for drinks in the last minute with a lame excuse, you reply:
"Are you for real pulling an Irene on us? Not cool!"
