It has several beautiful cities such as Boston, Springfield, Chicopee, and Worcester. It's official nickname is the bay state do to it's main bay, Cape Cod. It was one of the original thirteen colonies and was the 6th state to join the union in 1788. It was the 1st state to abolish slavery in 1783, followed by Connecticut the very next year in 1784. Statistically it is the smartest state in the United States. Maine used to be a part of Massachusetts but was released as a independent state in 1820. Although it saw no action during the civil war, it supplied the union with weapons, food, ammunition, and men. Massachusetts gets all four seasons, which means hot Summers and cold Winters. Basketball was invented in Springfield
