A term originally used medically for people with mental disorders. The term was used as an excuse to rape, torture, and kill thousands of adults and children. It is a slur and extremely offensive as it reminds those actually struggling with mental health that somebody out there might just want them dead. This has not been reclaimed by any communities and is not a word to be used in common language or really at all.
People who would once be considered clinically r*tarded are crippled by a society that lacks supports, not their own mental health.

Get the Jacks House: Rmug. An evolution of internet trolls, born entirely of mobile social media. Troll behavior is derived from real life mischief for one's own personal entertainment such as prank calling, ding dong ditching, flaming doggie bag prank etc. Trolls online create chaos aimed at a single individual (or small group) for personal entertainment usually without outside observers. Online trolls rarely uses their real identity, because they do not want to be exposed. An online troll generally creates a thought out plan to troll.
A R@t is purely a digital concept. R@tting is impossible IRL, because a human can never communicate with millions of people at once.
A R@t has trolled so much that it affected their mental health and become a daily compulsion. Since they no longer get doapmine from the post itself, they resort to posting whatever shocking posts will get the most attention from others. R@tting is often nonsensical and not a response to the thread.
They only get the doapmine boost from garnering notoriety and a personal status, so most R@ts use their real identity. It isn't clear whether most R@ts are human or actually an AI, since their posts are often seemingly impossibly timed for a human to do. R@tting is only possible with a mobile device. A R@ts main focus is to be the first to reply, or the first to be seen by most users, not for personal enjoyment.
Spelled with an @ to both differentiate from other definitions of a Rat, and to signify it's digital only nature.

"Who is that asian doctor and the hippie guy always the 1st to reply to the president's tweets? Man, they are such Trolls."
"No actually, they are R@ts. They don't do it for fun, they do it due to deranged compulsion and for notoriety. Trolling has affected their mental health. I feel bad for them"

Get the r/coaxintoasnafumug. A word to skirt around 2 very different slurs, one being racist that every other definition in UD will explain, & the other being "Retard," because it starts with an R & "Tard" is also a slur.
There has been no study on the divide between the use; Generational, regional, financial, or racial, outside of the fact that the use for r3t@rd is very common outside of the USA but still used in the states. Both groups up until 2023 seem to have been completely unaware of the alternative use for the term, due to cultural or social differences & a lack of communication between cliques.

It wasn't until the Linus Tech Tips podcast that people learned there were two uses for the Hard R, & neither of them were good.
