The term refers to the birthday of Bob Marley he was born on April 20 hence 4/20 and shortened to 420. He is the universaly proclaimed leader of the religious use of marajuana.

In Hawaii when 420 is mentioned it is recognized as code for marajuana. The raggae music appreciation and the pot culture is widely recognized here.

I read in a book once, and it was a REFERENCE book, mind you... that one of the first recorded weed plants grown was on April 20th, some year god knows i forget... later.
