Bearing the similar name as the car that can turn into a robot, "transformer" is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another by changing alternating current (AC) voltage, either increasing (step-up) or decreasing (step-down) it. It works by using two magnetically coupled coils to induce a current in the second coil via a changing magnetic field created by the first coil, a principle known as mutual induction. I thought we were talking about the cool robot cars, but then my buddy started explaining how a transformer actually changes voltage levels in electrical circuits—definitely not as exciting, but way more useful!
