Relatively crude all-encompassing term for a group of bands who are musically quite disparate. Current jam band successes include such unique groups as Phish (closer to being straight rock than anything), String Cheese Incident (electric-grass or "acid grass"), Yonder Mountain String Band (more traditional bluegrass), Umphrey's McGee (prog-rock and jazz influences), Widespread Panic (Southern-ish rock), Blues Traveler (blues and power rock), Medeski Martin and Wood (jazz), etc. The originators of the phenomenon were the Grateful Dead, and Dead successors such as the Other Ones, Ratdog, and Phil Lesh & Friends carry the mantle of the Dead legacy today. The term "jam band" is of course rooted in the fact that all of these bands "jam," or improvise for long periods of time during their shows. Other characteristics of "jam band" status include dedicated traveling fan bases, close rapport with such fans, long sets at shows, etc.

One who is in the high school band, and more specifically, the marching band. Probably some of the biggest perverts you will ever happen upon, a band kid's life centers around marching band.
Their life? They have none because it consists entirely of marching band.
It is worth it though and they love every minute (That they're not hating with a passion, such as parades.)
Most wouldn't trade it for the world.
Roll stepping your way through band camp, 'band bus' rides and the shenanigans that go on, competitions and practice.
This is our life.

"Hey, you want to invite Emily to come with us?"
"She can't, she has a football game to go to. Marching band and all..."
"Well, how about Saturday?"
"She has a competition."
"Sunday?"
"Practice."
"Monday?"
"Pep band."
"Tuesday?"
"Practice."
"Does she have ANY day free?"
"Dude, she's a band kid."

A bus that most band geeks (especialy those in MB) ride to go on an 8 hour trip to festival or a contest. Many things happen on that bus, there's telling of jokes that only band geeks would get, making out and many stories about band bus rides.
What happens on the band bus, stays on the band bus...
