It means white American or person of British decent. Specifically for Americans because hispanics that live in South and Central America consider themselves americano, but by US standards they are not American. African Americans, Asians are not gringos.

Gringo

Gringo is a word used through Spanish speaking countries to describe someone who is not of Hispanic/Latin origin from the USA regardless of race. It is not a derogatory term, it is used instead of American because in Latin America we also consider ourselves American since we are all from the same continent.
