Ivory Tower Syndrome

A state of mind sometimes found in academics and intellectuals who become so wrapped up in their intelligence and their studies (their "Ivory Tower") that they become disconnected from the rest of the world. Often produces attributes that make for unpleasant social interactions, ranging from severe shyness and introversion to arrogance, haughtiness, and pride.

Dr. So-And-So used to be such a great person until they started working in academia. Then they started losing touch with the world around them and developed a severe case of Ivory Tower Syndrome, and now they think everyone with an IQ less than 120 is an "ignoramus."

Logical Ivory Tower

An institution, community, or mindset where logic is treated as the exclusive domain of an elite—where certain ways of reasoning are privileged and others dismissed, where logical standards are set by those inside the tower and imposed on those outside. The Logical Ivory Tower mistakes its local standards for universal ones, its preferred methods for the only methods. It produces logical systems that work perfectly within the tower but fail outside it. The Logical Ivory Tower is the home of the hyperrationalist, the formalist, the one who confuses their toolkit with the toolbox.

Logical Ivory Tower Example: "The philosophy department was a logical ivory tower—debating fine points of formal logic while the world burned. Their arguments were impeccable; their relevance was zero. The tower kept them safe from the messy, illogical world—and also kept them useless to it."

Scientific Ivory Tower

The Scientific Ivory Tower mistakes its local practices for universal ones, its preferred methods for the only path to knowledge. It produces science that works within the tower but fails to address the needs of those outside. The Scientific Ivory Tower is the home of the academic who can't communicate with the public, the researcher whose work never leaves the lab, the discipline that has become irrelevant to the world it claims to study.

Scientific Ivory Tower Example: "The research institute was a scientific ivory tower—cutting-edge work, brilliant minds, zero impact. Their papers were cited by each other; their findings never reached the public. The tower kept them pure and irrelevant. Outside, people struggled with problems the tower could solve—if it ever looked down."
