In Theatre, the long line of handles and ropes, typically Stage Right or Left in the Upstage wingspace of a Theatre. The ropes- "purchase lines," control the up and down travel of scenery, lights, effects and equipment suspended in the air by a system of pulleys, cables, pipes, and counterweights.

A cliched maneuver of incapacitating adversaries in many action-based films by firing at a rival gunmen standing near a guard rail, to which they then flip over the structure (more often then not, clutching the entry wound before plummeting). Possibly first referenced in the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode "Space Mutiny".
